Did you mean grammatical means instead of lexical means? "Menos complejo" while speaking of the Spanish verbal system sounds a bit odd.

hubiera soltado ---> something you didn't do because you did something else (including doing nothing)
se soltara ---> something anyone may do any time (present, future and even past) I don't perceive any indication of past in "were (to be) released". I do perceive some idea of "if we're bound to do it" in the form using "to be", but maybe it's just my imagination.

En mi opinion cuando se añade "to be" es un poco más como un experimento de pensamiento, menos como una potencialidad.
