practical function of the passive reflexive

¡Hola!
I find the concept of the passive reflexive rather confounding.
The table below is my attempt at collecting the examples and presenting them in a digestible format.
Would you explain what the practical function of the passive reflexive / impersonal reflexive is?
What can one put in the round brackets?

Thank you.

The passive reflexive is a misleading term in that it truly is not reflexive.
example: It's done throughout the world can be translated as se lo hace por todo el mundo. An alternate way of saying this in English is, they do it all over the world. Likewise in Spanish there are alternate ways.

El francés usó (the Frenchman is the subject, that is, the user)
El francés se usó ( the French language is the object, that is, the thing used)

Las noticias se divulgaron (por sí solas) (the news have become an agent now)
