a has several different usages. One simple one is a always follows the verb ir.
So you would say: Voy a la casa de mi amigo or Voy al cine.
A is always used in front of the direct or indirect object if these objects happen to be
a person or a respected animal like a pet dog or cat. THIS RULE IS NOT IN EFFECT WHEN PRONOUNS LIKE LO LA LOS LAS LES LE ARE USED IN PLACE OF THE THE DIRECT/INDIRECT OBJECT NOUN Examples: Di a mi amiga el libro. No ovides alimentar a mi perro cuando estoy en vaccaciones.
Look into a good Spanish/English text book to further explain these rules. Unlike other European languages, Spanish as an official language is pretty modern (only about 500 years old). For that reason the grammarians who helped make the language official, created rules that are more logical than they are in other languages. For that reason the use of the personal a is a pretty cut and dry rule that, once you learn, is easy with no exceptions (in the written language, at least)
