@Hernán: Discutimos la palabra "instituto" como "centro estatal de enseñanza secundaria". Por lo que dice Ookami, ni en Argentina, ni en México, los institutos enseñan exclusivamente a estudiantes de secundaria. Por lo tanto, si alguien lo utiliza de esa manera, tiene que ser específico, o no quedará claro a qué tipo de instituto se refiere.

Here on my island, I mean in my city that is named Institute or university where you study a degree or any career.

I don't know if in Chile that is named in another way.

And therefore Angelica's answer are correct.
The person needs to be clear in that kind to school is referred.

You can use Instuto or universidad.
