Correct me if I am wrong but then the sentence should translate exactly to:
In short, who am I to judge that lady, concluded Frank, observing Pablo out of the corner of his eye and asking himself with curiosity, despite himself, how much truth was there in the rumors. |

I feel the English version a bit strange, but I'm not a native English speaker. If they find it does makes sense, then it will be correct.

I'd think that "despite himself" would better conveyed with "much to his regret"... Let's see if an English native speaker says something...!
