Los cuates (with a 'c') are your buddies or friends, or it could mean twins. In the singular form, cuate, it could mean a guy or a pal, in addition to a buddy, friend or twin.

The meaning of your question mean friend, mostly here in Mexico is used that slang.

and to add some culture =). . .cuate comes from "Cuatl", a nahuatl word meaning "friend" or "brother". So this word (as far as I know) is exclusively from Mexican Spanish.
