Question Appositives

Exercise A. Identifying appositives.
The appositive will be in parentheses. The word(s) it renames will be underlined.
1. Mr. Smith, a (lawyer), is away on vacation.
2. My sister (Alice) is a medical student.
3. That house, a (saltbox), is typical of colonial New England architecture.
4. The paper's editor, (Ms. Hughes), personally confirmed the story.
5. John Greenleaf Whittier wrote the poem ("Snowbound").
6. Our school's most popular teacher, (Ms. Jenkins), will retire next year.
7. The movie (Jaws) broke box office records.
8. Dad's special dessert, (rice pudding), won a blue ribbon at the state fair.
9. The poet (Shelley) drowned in a boating accident.
10. Ed ordered his favorite dinner, (pizza).

Exercise B. Identifying appositive phrases.
The appositive phrase will be in parentheses. The word(s) it renames or explains will be underlined.
1. The contestants hope to win the first prize, a sports [car] with a convertible top.
2. Mrs. Konevich refused to use the machine, a [dangerous chain saw].
3. Shelley's sister, a track (star) at UCLA, runs three miles every morning.
4. He took her to a movie, a hilarious (comedy) about two pair of twins.
5. Two boys in a truck, (residents) of the nearest town, gave the travelers a rid to the gas station.
6. The most valuable player, the pitcher of the varsity team, received an award at the dinner.
7. We gave her, our noisy (neighbor), a warning.
8. Alice's father was an intelligence scout, a (member of ski troops) in World War II.
9. "You, (sleepyhead), should pay more attention," she said as she jumped three of my kings.
10. Mr. Matienzo is a magician, a (genius with sleight of hand).

Exercise C. Identifying compound appositives.
The compound appositive will be in parentheses. The word(s) it renames or explains will be underlined.
1. Hundreds of years ago, people used natural diving equipment, [hollow reeds for snorkels and tortoise shells for goggles].
2. Some of the first modern underwater equipment was developed by two Frenchmen, (Jacques-Yves Cousteau and Emile Gagnan).
3. The simplest form of underwater diving, (skin diving or breath-hold diving), is what she learned first.
4. The basic equipment, (swim fins, a face mask, and a snorkel), is easy for amateurs to use.
5. Experienced divers often use scuba gear, (compressed-air tanks and a wet suit), that allows them to swim underwater for long periods.

Excuse me, Jessica, but what is this about? Are you supposed to translate these sentences? Try yourself first, Ok? At least, some...It's a ton of work.

No, this is for English class. All you have to do is check if I found the correct appositive and the word(s) that it renames

All is correct in exercises A and C.

Only number 9 in exercise B is correct (it shouldn't have been included in that group because the appositive wasn't a phrase). Your phrases aren't inclusive enough.

Here's a helpful sentence from Wikipedia. The appositive phrases are italicized. The noun the phrases rename are underscored.
An appositive, a grammatically incomplete noun phrase, is sometimes set off by commas, a reader-friendly invention.
