Sí, son sinónimos. Bueno, eso creo, no soy muy aficionada a los deportes, pero eso dicen por la tele

Me parece raro que "caer" podría significar "like" y "fall"

¿Iker me cae muy bien = I like Iker very much?
Bob me cae = quiero Bob

La expresión es "caer bien".

Bob me cae (muy) bien = I like Bob (very much).

"Quiero a Bob" necesita más que pura simpatía (not to be confused with "sympathy" btw); implica naturalmente afecto, así que necesitas más conocer más a la persona que sólo haberla visto en televisión.

But if I said "I like Bob", he could understand that I feel something towards him. This is not the case with "caer bien". So, I can say:

Bob me cae bien = Bob me gusta (como persona, como amigo, etc.)
Bob me gusta = Siento algo por Bob
Bob me cae bien ≠ Siento algo por Bob.
