"el mero afán de acumular" = comprar, juntar cosas, apropiarse ... sin ningún objetivo particular o elevado y sólo por el gusto de hacerlo
"no era una aberración tan generalizada" = como una costumbre social -despreciable a juicio del que la dice- no estaba tan extendida

El único anhelo (que yo tenía) era acumular (libros), pero (éste) no es un mal hábito que tenga todo el mundo.
