Yes, it's used likely in the boats with captain's boat, but normally it's used in the sea not in the land or on the city at least if you're speaking about the some airplane, but I have never herd it in the a driver car or other place that doesn't be in the army or navy.

Aquí sí usamos los puntos cardinales (N, S, E, O). A veces, para denominar O (Oeste) se usa la nomenclatura en inglés (W). También sus combinaciones: nordeste o noreste (NE), suroeste o sudoeste (SW - SE), nornoroeste (NNW - NNO), etc. Se utilizan en carreteras (toma la carretera que a al Norte y desvíate por el primer camino hacia el Este), indicaciones de viviendas (mi piso tiene orientación sureste), observación de las estrellas, etc.

Yes, you also can say "perder el norte" when you are disorientated, or when you're in a bad situation in your life (for instance, if someone looses his job and he has to start again looking for a new job)
