@Perikles: many words can be unknown in many regions or they're too archaic or too literary for the common people to know them. But that's when dictionaries are a blessing.

You can also say:

Tan pronto como llegó (this construction is more similar to the English one. You can say either one or the other )

I knew this word, but it's not really used. We say "oler mal" (or less formal: "cantar" : te cantan los pies, a ver si te duchas )
