Por allí anda la cosa.

Olor a vino vomitado.

No es olor a vómito exactamente. ¿Ves?

Fíjate además que en el contexto es "de un abominable olor a vino devuelto".

Repugnant, detestable, loathsome, revolting stench.

Most likely it is not vomited, but the guy is so drunk that he is exuding the wine stench...

The image I get is the father has been drinking at a bar, with other drunkards and some of them may have vomited too, but he is totally plastered (heavily drunk).

As long as you convey the concept of the heavy stench of the father, I think you'll be okay on your translation.

Also the idea of "repeat on" for "devuelto" may be valid, like food (but in this case wine)
2 « food » to repeat ON sb: onions repeat on me = la cebolla me repite

En este caso a vino vomitado/devuelto. El stench/olor es a vino vomitado.

Vomitado no es lo mismo que "pasado(s) a vino"
