Meterse

Hola,

I cannot get my head around meterse, i am so used to poner, could somebody explain when to use it, or better still when not use it, for example could i say me meto en la cama?? o something similar.

Yes, you can say that.
"Meterse" is a reflexive form of the verb "meter".

- Metió los cerillos en la caja. -> He put the matches in the box.
- Mete la ropa en la lavadora, por favor. -> Put the laundry into the washing machine, please.
- Puse protecciones en los contactos de las paredes para que el niño no les meta nada. -> I put some wall outlet covers so the baby won't put anything in them.
- ¿Cuántos goles metió Messi? -> How many goals did Messi make?

- Me metí temprano en la cama. -> I went early to bed.
- ¡Cuidado, se metió una rata en la casa! -> Look out, a rat got into the house!
- Esos muchachos se metieron al cine sin boleto. -> Those teens entered the theatre with no tickets.

You can also use it in the sense of ''getting involved in''.

¡No te metas en esa bronca!
Don't get involved in that mess!

No me quiero meter en ese asunto.
I don't want to get caught up in that business.

Where I live ''un(a) metiche'' is a person who sticks their nose in everybody's business.

Once when some tree surgeons came to the house to remove a fallen tree from the back yard I heard one of the crew members say ¿Cómo se mete? when he didn't know which way to go to gain access to the main trunk. So apparently it can be a synonym for entrar.

I would have thought he would be either thinking about how to find a hole to get through or where to start using a chainsaw, or something like that.

Right, that's just what he was thinking - maybe I didn't explain the situation too well since he was looking for a way to get himself through a mass of tangled limbs on the ground to reach the trunk- so meterse can also mean entrar con dificultad?
