India (country) in spanish is "la india".

The adjective - indian is "india".
What is a male/female indian referred to in spanish like mexicano (male mexican) and mexicana (female mexican).

So simple

If you are VERY specific you can say "un indio de la India" and "un indio americano", for determining wich "indio" you're speaking, but usually it comes from the context.

Some Latin Americans call Native Americans Indios
and people native of India Hindús even if their religion is not Hindu.

Hindús? .. I dont think that should be the right way to call as how you said there are many religions followed in this country.

Since for "indian" it is "india" I guessed an indian will be refered as "indio/a" but Poli says native americans are called that way......

It's not right, but it's a reality. I suspect that in the countries where Hindú is used informally to discribe people from India may not have a big populations of Indians.

Estás entrando al mundo de "políticamente correcto" (politically correct) pc....

Todos nosotros pertenecemos a una raza o a un grupo cultural y nos gustaría que nos llamaran como lo que somos, no como pc le parece al resto del mundo.

En este país, por ejemplo se les llamaba "indio" a las personas nativas a los E.U. que pertencían a una tribu. Y hay o hubo varias tribus. Me imagino que había enemistad entre las tribus como lo hay con muchos seres humanos.

A las personas de color anteriormente se les llamaba "black" y varios otros términos derogatoris. Hoy en día se les llama (pc) African-American. y sabes qué? Ahora hay muchos que dicen que no son de Africa y por lo tanto no les gusta que les llamen African American.

A la gente de México, España y todos los otros países donde se habla Español se les llama (pc) Hispanic or Latinos......en sí no son de Hispaniola ni hablan Latín.

Entiendo que si eres blanco con ojos de color y hablas inglés, (pc) eres "Americano" o no muy "nice" Gringo aunque seas del Canadá o Inglés, etc.

Asi que lo siento me gustaría que las cosas fueran distintas.

indio American = Native American
Indian (from India) = Indio (de la India)

Your questions is some complicate, 'cause in some places of this earth, there're a lot types of tribes, for example, as you said it. in the indian the persons are called hindu, but in Mexico, the people of the hills, they're called indians, I think, What it depend of the place where are you, in another example, the word indian's used in others forms of expression as idiom, at least, here in my country that word is used for to say to a person with lowly of culture, if you need more information about it, you can to find in google, threads about it.

Sort of like some uninformed Americans who call anyone who speaks the Spanish language "Spanish" even if they're not from Spain.
