"Sino" means "but", only when it's "this instead of that".
- No estoy tomando tequila, sino mezcal. I'm not drinking tequila, but mezcal. - Hay tantas nubes, que el cielo no se ve azul, sino gris. There are so many clouds, that the sky is not blue, but grey. "Pero" means "but", when it introduces an opposite idea. - No me gusta el mezcal, pero el tequila sí. I don't like mezcal, but I do like tequila. - El cielo es azul, pero hay tantas nubes que no puedo verlo. The sky is blue, but there are so many clouds that I can't see it.
