No sé sabe por qué se usan aditivos en los alimentos. Aquí usaría why.
No se saben las razones por las que / por que se usan aditivos. Aquí creo que sería más lógico usar because, porque no preguntas, sino afirmas.

Hay dos más:

No se sabe el porqué del uso de aditivos (no se sabe el motivo)
Usan aditivos porque quieren. Aquí también usaría because.

Pues en general creo que por qué -> why y porque -> because, pero por que ->

Because puede contestar una pregunta (implícita o explícita) de why, o puede establecer una consecuencia lógica ( puesto que).

En tu frase original probablemente diría "one of the main reasons that preservatives are used in certain foods" o "one of the main reasons for using preservatives in certain foods".

(If there is an English expression for this as well it doesn't come to mind or I don't know it so I'd appreciate if someone else does know it. )

This means as much as if you are trying to set a trap for someone else (literally or figuratively ), it will come back to haunt you, i.e. you will pay the price of this sooner or later (it will bite you in the proverbial ass..).

Lo que has dicho tú, sin cambiar ni una letra, me suena. Creía que venía del libro de Proverbios de la Biblia (y por eso sería conocido en todas las lenguas europeas), pero lo único que puedo encontrar ahí es "If a man digs a pit, he will fall into it" (traducción NVI).
