Go in the water, Go into the water

I know go in the water is fine. Why don,t we use go into the water? When do we use one or the other?

That started a little argument. My wife claims 'go in the water' is fine. I say it is colloquial and low register. She didn't like that

. I claim 'into' is correct and better, she claims it's acceptable as an alternative, but less common.

Go into the water is clear and unambiguous. Go in the water may under some circumstances mean urinate or defecate in the water

Go into the water would never mean that.
