Así es, como dice Moliner,
dar la espalda a alguien = Abandonarle en una situación apurada.
o
volverle la espalda a alguien = to turn one’s back on somebody.

Volver la espalda [o las espaldas]. = Huir o marcharse.
Volver la espalda [o las espaldas] a alguien. = Despreciarle o desatenderle.
