La mar de = muy

"El mar" siempre da idea de "grande".

¿Entonces el mar se puede usar en lugar del océano (figuradamente) y la mar el Golfo de Mexico y el Caribe?

"El mar" y "la mar" se usan indistintamente (aunque "la mar" es más poético), tanto para cuerpos de agua salada, como para referirse a la abundancia de algo. "Ser la mar de (algo)" es una frase hecha.

Había un mar de gente = Había mucha (muchísima) gente.
Es un mar de confusión = Hay mucha (muchísima) confusión.

Esa compañía es la mar de ineptitud = Los empleados de esa compañía son ineptos.
Juan es la mar de amabilidad = Juan es muy amable.

El barco naufragó en medio del mar.
Cruzamos el mar en una balsa para llegar a Miami.

La mar estaba intranquila durante nuestra travesía.
La mar, teñida de rojo aquella tarde, fue inolvidable.

@Angelica: El uso del artículo femenino con "mar" también se da en gente que vive cerca del mismo o que tiene relación con él. Es más frecuente que una persona de la costa utilice "la mar" que "el mar". Por ejemplo: La mar está revuelta esta mañana.

de todas maneras, como dice ambarina, la gente que trata mucho con el mar, lo personifica, y la convierte en femenino, no solo poéticamente.
"la mar ha arrebatado a mucha gente" "caprichos de la mar" o el comentado "la mar está revuelta"

Es una expresión de cariño, de apego (el uso del femenino), que me recuerda algo parecido en inglés. Los marineros usan she para referirse a su barca.

En Ecuador la mar es siempre femenina. Incluso en la sierra me corregían sí decía "el mar".
