Gazapos

A "gazapo" (literally a young rabbit) it's in actual fact a misprint, or an error or just a mistake (equivocación).

I just read one in one Spanish on-line publication, and I thought it may be a good exercise for Spanish learners to detect the misprint.

I just copied the sentence with the error. Now, find the error. (This is not for Spanish speakers, as it seems too easy for them...)

Los Lakers abren la temporada regular el próximo partes cuando se enfrenten en el Staples Center a los Houston Rockets, en la jornada inaugural.

Where is the typo?

Yes, it's "martes". I could be "partido" but it's not this case.

But "gazapo" is also the kind of mischievous piece of news that is so well designed and the reporters buy lock, stock and barrel (¿cómo se dice "la clase de carnada que se tragan con todo y caña"?).

the reporters swallow it hook, line and sinker. (A fishing metaphor). This intentional mischievous news is known (I think) as a Canard (in English).

The "enfrenten" point (we go back to our subjunctive favorite subject!) is not a typo. It is correct, although "enfrentan" (indicative) wouldn't be incorrect either.

Thank you for the metaphors and synonyms. I see that "canard" comes from French, literally, duck; in sense 1, from Middle French vendre des canards à moitié to cheat, literally, to half-sell ducks First Known Use: 1851

También existe lo de "dar gato por liebre" (in the sense of 'cheating')

@Poli, te creo, en Cataluña se come "conejo al allioli" que está para chuparse los dedos. (Sobre todo si te gusta el ajo...)

@AlecCowan, gracias, no me sabía esa definición de "gazapo"... en España también se usa "gazapa" para "mentira, embuste".

I was thinking about something related which I forgot while I was answering everybody, but this "gazapo/typo" type of drill/exercise seems an interesting one thread-starter, as it helps to find any word or symbol not understood, which otherwise would be overlooked.

Ah, now I remembered, there are also the expressions, lapsus calami, lapsus linguae, defined by Moliner as follows,
Lapsus calami (pronunc. [lápsus cálami]). Equivocación cometida al correr de la pluma.
L. linguae (pronunc. [lápsus línguae] o [lápsus língüe]). Equivocación consistente en un simple cambio de palabras, sin haber confusión en el pensamiento.

The other thing is that "a real new" can also be "created" or "additional propaganda" done to it to serve some "vested interest" (See Deception Point by Brown) (But now I start veering... as usual)

En inglés "to sell a pig in a poke", que está relacionado con "to let the cat out of the bag". Creo que ya hemos hablado de todas estas frases en otro hilo.

En valencià se escribe "alioli", aunque el ajo como palabra separada sigue siendo "all".

Ah, es verdad, en castellano también "alioli". Es en catalán donde se escribe "allioli". ¡Gracias por pillar ese gazapillo tan pillo!

Aquí en castellano se dice ajiaceite, pero veo que las dos están en el DRAE.

¡Qué curioso! Mis padres siendo manchegos siempre usaron "alioli"... es la primera vez que veo lo del "ajiaceite" y "ajoaceite".

Moliner dice que en Aragón lo llaman "ajolio" y da la opción de que esté hecho con mayonesa y ajo, no sólo con aceite.

(En Barcelona hay un restaurante "La Cueva Del Tío Jesús" donde hacen estas cosas muy bien...)

También me ha recordado este poemilla de Moratín, creo... ya que hablamos de gazapos... en toda su extensión. (Como siempre, yo, con... ciso.)

Ayer invité a Torcuato
comió sopas y puchero
media pierna de cordero
dos gazapillos y un pato
dile vino y contestó
tomazlo por vuestra vida
que hasta mitad de comida

You can find it several times in the web with a Google search...
(By the way "tomazlo" is actually "tomadlo", which is the correct form. The "tomazlo" form is a phonetic way to write it, as it is pronounced in the center of Spain.)

Moratín was an excellent writer. (I also remember a poem I learned verbatim, called "Los días" "¿No es curiosa desgracia que por ser hoy mis días he de verme sitiado de incómodas visitas?" (He refers to his Birthday being a pain in the neck...) (But that is another subject...)
