I agree..., if someone is "by your side", he is more "reachable" than someone who is far away, so in some very specific context "a su alcance" might fit, but not generally.
(What is your context?)

Específicamente, a su costado: a la vera del camino (collocation) ---> en las tierras inmediatas al camino / a la vera de alguien (próximo o junto, a la izquierda o la derecha)
