Salirse del huacal

I'm finding three very different meanings for this expression, namely:

to get off track (in a conversation, discussion or meeting)
to fly off the handle (with anger)
to step out of line (by disobeying some established convention of behavior)

Which one is it?

I've never heard it with your second meaning.

It's usually to do something you are not supposed to.

I haven't heard it used often for making a digression, but it's not too strange:

The Concise Oxford Spanish Dictionary gives meanings number 1 and 3, and attributes both to Mexican usage. The word huacal comes from Náhuatl.

An extra remark: a "huacal" can be a wooden case for vegetables (those made of wooden strips).
And some people also use it to talk about the hollow space under a bird's wing (where chicks are kept warm).

Encontré esto que no conocía:
Quote:
Huacal o guacal
Quote:
