Does this help? decidirse = to make up one's mind:

@Katerina: "Decidirse" is exactly what Perikles has said. The captain feels guilty that he did make a decision not to join the fate of his ship and escaped. That's why he tells the story over and over...

Yes it's exactly correct in the phrase because he didn't quite agree if he shares or not his story.
He ain't very sure about his decision. I don't know maybe he wanted to keep himself the story for he solely.
