I don't think the fact that there is a special noun for it would mean that that's what you would use in all situations. If I'm not mistaken, you could say:

Estoy un poquito confundido. ¿Se usa un acento con el pretérito del verbo ver? Lo he visto con el acento y sin el acento también.

Accents are used to indicate where the stress is in the word. As an example, I'll use corazón (heart).

Now, normally, the stress on a word ending with an N would be on the second-to-last syllable....
