Creo que sería:
ball = esfera
socket = receptáculo
joint = unión
así que algo así:
unión de esfera y receptáculo
unión giratoria de esfera
Quizá la opinión de un hablante nativo será más útil.

coyuntura esferoide (speheroidal joint is another word for ball and socket joint) also enarthrosis (even though it sounds like a disease) is another word for ball and socket joint--so would that be enartroso in Spanish?
Addendum: RAE says enartrosis. I'm sure this is the best word ,but articulación esferoide also works.

As mecanical term, I will go with Rusty: junta articulada o articulación de rótula
as Medical term, I suppose Poli's right.

I couldn't find any hits on the internet for that term.

The ones I mentioned are primarily mechanical, but articulación esférica is also used medically.

Yes to my knowledge, or enartrosis.

And as Rusty states articulacíon esférica seems good, but if you Google articulación esferoide, you'll get lots of hit too. Apparently they are synomomous. Coyuntura seems to be a less technical word. Articulación is better medical jargon.

How about.......

articulación esférica

Éste término se utiliza cuando uno está hablando de reemplazar la cadera (Artroplastía) por causa de artrítis u otra condición médica que ha causado la deteriorización de la coyuntura.

el mecanismo
Lo que pasó fue que el médico establa explicándole al paciente los detalles de una cirugia y el mecanismo de ese tipo de articulación. Por eso, se refería siempre al "ball" y "socket." No se trataba de una sola referencia a la articulación. Si eso fuera el caso, hubiera dicho "articulación esférica" o algo por el estilo, pero necesitaba hablar específicamente la función de las varias partes de la coyuntura. Me explico?

Quizás las palabras receptáculo y esfera (lo que sugirió David) serían las más adecuadas.

Debes usar 'do' con casi todos los verbo para formar una pregunta como ésta, pero, no se usa 'do' con el verbo 'to be'. Así que esta pregunta debe ser:

Are you a doctor? = ¿Eres doctor? / ¿Es usted doctor?
