The term caja de ahorros is used mainly in Spain, and refers to a certain type of credit institution, similar to a bank, credit union or savings and loan association. A caja de ahorros is often a non-profit organization. In other places, such as Mexico, caja de ahorros has no special meaning like this.

Agree with David.
in Spain, "cajas de ahorros" are a type of bank. The "cajas de ahorros" are like a little federal-state bank/credit union/savings and loan association. They only work in their main state, and the goverment has influence. It's not so money-oriented like an usual bank, they have to spend some of the earnings in social projects. saludos ![]()
