Entonces en tuve que armarme de valor instead of i had to pluck up courage, I say I had to be brave I guess.

Yes, that's a valid translation.

You can all say (more figuratively):

Chin up
Be tough
Keep a stiff upper lip (very British), but it will clearly be understood on both sides of the ocean.
Buck up (old fashioned)
