Freno

This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for June 18, 2008

freno - masculine noun (el), brake, bit (horse). Look up freno in the dictionary

Necesito revisar los frenos de mi coche porque ya empezaron a chillar.
I need to check the brakes on my car because they've started squealing.

I would probably say chirriar for squealing in this context.

I've heard lots of Mexicans use chillar in this context, so I think both are right, and they are regional differences.

Freno y chillar

Me gusta las palabras, "freno" y "chillar". Había un murcielago in mi casa la semana pasado, y el chilló!

Hi, Mrss92,
Better say: Me gustan las palabras...

I also like murciélago, but chillar is much better.

Any special reason why you like the word bat? Maybe you share the same interests?

Si tienes bats in your belfry significa que eres loco.
Put the brakes on significa aplica los frenos literalmente y figuradamente

Better say: figuradamente. You don't need to repeat -mente, but it's only an option.

Knowing him, I bet he did. And here he was making us believe he was in mourning.

Poli: corrigiera.
But, to me, it sounds more close and charming: Me ayuda(rá) si corrige mis errores. This is a Condicional real, the one you use is a Condicional hipotética, so it seems as you weren't confident on people to correct you. Are you?

That wasn't Jaimito yet. I don't feel any remorse.
I'm still wicked hungry.

It was just a dead body, not Jaimito. Does it make sense now? Do I have to change anything? Is the deixis clear? All these doubts make me feel terrible unhappy. Please, solve them.

What you wanted to say was: It wasn't Jaimito any more.
Don't be unhappy any more, we all love you.

satisfichar tu wicked hunger.

Poli, I thought you were a sweet-tempered guy. How can you be so insensitive in the face of Jaimito's death?

Yeah, you all love me, but I'm hungry all the same.
I will have to review the thread where I learnt Not to be... yet. Is it possible what I wrote?
Thanks a lot for your great help. Yours and that from Poli.
