In Spain we say Abrir la cabeza, but it doen´t mean open

"Abrirle la cabeza a alguien" means to hit someone's head so hard, that it bled. I think "cut his/her head open" is the right expression.

Ah, vale. Pues si es la fuerza del golpe y no el hacerlo con algo agudo o afilado, sería más específico decir "split his head open".

Ookami, no. "To tear" (vt) es lo que haces con una hoja de papel cuando lo partes con las manos. "He hit him and hurt his head" está bien pero es muy general - le hizo doler la cabeza.

"abierto" or "cerrado" is ok.
abrir la cabeza is like open your mind

-Tenes que ser más abierto. (accept others opinion)

In another context abrirse la cabeza can be translated as break your neck.
Si no tienes cuidado, te vas a abrir la cabeza.
If you are not careful, you'll break your neck.

Interesting..! How funny we have 'zijn hoofd breken over iets' meaning to ponder endlessly but not being able to come up with a sollution or to think very hard (but usually to no avail..)

Literally it would be 'to break your head over something', kind of like 'rompecabeza' .. (in fact we also call puzzles 'hoofdbrekers' much like rompecabezas'.. )

By the way we also know 'je nek breken' = to break your neck. Or in fact slang for 'to kill'
