This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for June 1, 2009

pantorrilla (feminine noun (la)) — calf (of the leg). Look up pantorrilla in the dictionary

Me corté en la pantorrilla y ahora me duele cuando camino.
I cut myself on my calf and now it hurts when I walk.

Aquí se suele nombrar el mar que cruzas:

Cruzó el Mediterráneo a nado.
Me duelen las pantorrillas tras cuzar todo el Atlántico nadando.
Cruzó a nado el Canal de la Mancha con los pies atados.

También se cruza a la otra orilla (de un río, lago, etc.), nadando o no.

Pregúntale a ese barquero si te puede cruzar a la otra orilla.

You can't use 'ejercitar'? I pulled that from wordreference.com. But I understand the correction, so I'll update my "Book of Bad Puns." Probably also change 'vacas' to 'toros'.

As irmamar says, you can use ejercitar, but remember that ejercitar is transitive (requires a direct object) and hacer ejercicio is intransitive (does not take a direct object). To exercise is both transitive and intransitive.

"Ejercitarse" can be a synonym of "hacer ejercicio" as well.


"Me ejercito muchísimo. Ahora mis pantorrillas son fuertes como toros".

In Chile canilla means shin, and pera means chin. (yo tengo la pera partida)

Canilla is the tibia, and the front of the bone, i.e. the part that's most likely to get kicked (the shin) is called espinilla.

The pun would be "¡Ahora mis pantorrillas son terneras!
Vaca=cow
Toro = bull
Calf = ternero/a. In Gallego: cuxo/tenreiro/xato
