We use the word Gauntlet in English for a long armoured or leather glove. I think from Norman French gantelet. The Germans are very logical and call gloves Handschuhe.

I know that the word afterward means despues.

But I want to know if can replace that word with later.

We can go jeeping later
Afterward, we can go jeeping (afterward" es al principio de la oración)

Later is more broad then afterward(s)

Later (sometime) [broad] we are going to the movies
I work until 5PM, afterwards (refers to a more precise point in time) we are going to the movies

After to know every this about the use of the word despues. I believe that, I'm going to turn to use the word afterwards it sound much better than the other one.

As was explained above, later and afterward(s) are not always interchangeable. Both words have distinct meanings and are used the same way in England and America, with the exception that the British don't use afterward; they always say afterwards.
