Is "it is alleged" correct in this sentence?

Se supone que los Neandertales vivían en grupos aislados.
It is alleged that the Neanderthals used to live in isolated groups.

Maybe "The Neanderthal are alleged to live..." ?

I suppose (!!!) that you could write the sentence either way. But I don't know that you would typically see that usage for the word "alleged". I would say "assumed" in that case (wording it either way that you have structured the sentence).

Irma - I don't think allege is the correct verb. I would use it is assumed, it is suggested, or it is claimed.

The context would determine which of these.

Nobody really knows anything about Neanderthals, and it is assumed that ....

Professor Arbuthnort Funtingdon has just written a paper about Neanderthals, in which it is claimed that... / it is suggested that...

Others may disagree, but allege is normally used where something bad is going on:

The lady complained that the man knocked her off her bicycle on purpose, and she alleged that he interfered with her clothing.

It was alleged that the politician took millions of euros public money and spent it on new suits for himself and black stockings for his girlfriends.

I don't think "allege" is wrong here, but "claim" is probably more common. Personally I often translate "se supone" as "supposedly".

Yet, "allegedly" is rightfully translated as "supuestamente, según se dice"
she allegedly visited him that morning = supuestamente or según se dice lo habría visitado esa mañana.
they have been disqualified for allegedly violating the rules = los han descalificado por una supuesta violación del reglamento.

Yeah...................... but the sense is different. When scientists get together and mostly agree on something, you can't say so definitely, but you can say "assume" which gives a high level of supposition.

Whereas if you say "alleged" in regards to someone saying that they did something, there is a tad bit of doubt introduced. It's almost the opposite from "assumed", which mostly eliminates doubt....

I looked "se supone" up in an online dictionary and the answer was "it is alleged", that's why I asked here, because I wasn't sure of this option.

También hay una acepción de "se supone" que se podría llamar "se supone irrealis", que lleva implícita un "pero se ve que no es así". Esa acepción traduciría "in theory".

La palabra más segura para traducir "suponer" es "suppose". "I suppose you are upset with me, because I lost the money for the department's rent."

"Allege" es afirmar, y no me parece probable que sea el sentido que buscas.
