"Trial and error" means that if you don't know how to do something, or you don't have instructions, etc, then you just try and err until you figure out the right way to do it.

Tantear el terreno.
That phrase is a sentence colloquial in my country it want to means that you're watching the place where you going to go in some moments. I mean, for instance. Rosa estas tanteando mi llegada. Rosa. You're waiting my arrived. In this example Rosa is waiting for the arrive to him, as you can see the word is exchange of another, therefore waiting and tanteando are completely the same.
