This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for September 20, 2008

pirámide - feminine noun (la) - pyramid. Look up pirámide in the dictionary

En Teotihuacán, México, encuentras varias pirámides y las ruinas de una ciudad.

Yes, In Mérida, Campeche, Veracruz, Oxaca, Chiapas, you can to see them, and they are very powerful in their history.

¿Has ido alguna vez hasta Teotihuacán? Es impresionante. También son interesantes las pirámides de Veracruz, Campeche, Yucatán etc, pero sí son más chiquitas.

Si, pero en inglés, no puedes decir I don't meet there. No tiene sentido. Para comunicar la misma idea que no lo conozco en español, debes decir I've never been there, que literalmente son las palabras Nunca he ido allí, pero el siginicado es no lo conozco.

Dependiendo cómo lo usa, el verbo conocer tiene sentidos diferentes en inglés.
¿Conoces a esa mujer?
Have you met that woman? (-or- Do you know that woman?)
No, no la conozco.
No, I haven't met here. (-or- No, I don't know her.)

¿Conoces México?
Have you been to Mexico?
No, no lo conozco.
No, I haven't been there.

Si, hay varias formas de traducir conocer. Además de los significados que menciona Rusty, otro es to be familiar with.

¿no saben que, en Puerto Rico, la palabra por "snowcone (shaved ice)" es "piragua"?
el prefijo "pir-" proviene de "pirámide"....y "agua" es water (en inglés), por supuesto. Pensé que este era interesante.

The prefix "pir-" comes from the Spanish "pirámide"....and "agua" means water, of course. I thought this was cool.
