mesa? Mostrador doesn't sound right...Barra?

Mesada is the one I use (more than nothing if it's the kitchen one, I mean, marble). "Barra" can be used, but it's mostly(or always..) used when you can eat in there, while mesada itself don't involve eating.

-Se sentó en la barra y pidió vodka.

-¡Usa una tabla o me vas a rayar la mesada! (cortando comida)

Mostrador is almost as "barra", but it has another meaning too, for example in a hotel the place/table that is infront of the receptionist, can be call mostrador. Something similar in stores.

I personally use them like this:

mostrador
barra
mesada

Creo que "barra" es la palabra apropiada. "Mostrador" es más para una tienda (en un bar o restaurante, también es mejor "barra").

@ookami: "mesada" lo entiendo como un pago mensual... nada qué ver con "mesa".

I didn't knew, here in Argentina the standard is "mesada", I don't know why; and it's only meaning is that.
(pago mensual = mensualidad)

Ah también se usa para posadas etc en lo comercial, lo que aca se llama barra. nosotros nunca usamos barra, quien sabe solo en los bares.

Yo también aprendí lo de la mesada. Nosotros al igual que uds lo usamos para decir monthly allowance. Siendo vecino de Argentina nunca supe de eso, y aún acá en Las Vegas, donde la mayoría de mis amigo son argentinos nunca he escuchado eso de mesada, y te diré que vamos a muchas casa para esto de los asados...

I found this in wordreference forum:

"En español (Argentina), mesada no significa pago mensual, sino encimero/ra: Superficie plana, de material resistente, que forma una especie de aparador sobre los muebles bajos de las cocinas y cuartos de baño. Si en Argentina pedís un "encimero" lo más probable es que no te entiendan o, peor aún, te malinterpreten."

Mal interpretar por esto:

So, encimero/ra can be use too, right?

No conozco a nadie en México que sepa qué es un encimero.
Para una superficie plana, de material resistente, que forma una especie de aparador sobre los muebles bajos de las cocinas, usaríamos "barra", "gabinete", "trinchador"... o en el último de los casos, "el mueble de la cocina".

Para un mueble similar en el baño, "gabinete" o "mueble del baño".

I wouldn't use encimera/o either, I have never heared of it before today.. I just wrote the text where it explained what "mesada" is. I think encimera/ro is more common in Spain.
But "mesada" here isn't like other coloquial words, that are the second choise, "mesada" is almost the only word for that things, it replace them completely. With "mesada" we aren't refering to all the structure, just the plain superfice, marble generaly.

There isn't too much difference with Rosario, accent and some slang but not that much, almost the same.
