Cola no sólo significa tail, también es sinónimo de pegamento.

@Brute: adding to David's explanation: these people cannot get together by any means. They repel each other.

Por aquí también se usa "no tragar a alguien (ni con agua)".

No pegan ni con cola means for example, the boy is poor and not educated , however the girl is rich and highly-educated, the topics of conversation are different. They don´t pegan ni con cola ( glue) but not nessesarily repel each other.
The same with tiles in a kitchen, or clothes when they don´t match.
